Lower-Limb Preservation Strategy
The Lower-Limb Preservation Strategy is an Ontario Health driven initiative with the goals to:
- Reduce avoidable, non-traumatic major lower-limb amputations in Ontario
- Improve equitable access to high-quality best-practice early screening, cardiovascular risk factor modification, and integrated lower-limb wound care
Reason for implementation
Lower-limb amputation is one of the most feared complications of vascular disease and/or diabetes and non-healing wounds
Peripheral vascular disease and diabetes are significant risk factors present in 94% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in Ontario, 85% of these cases are preventable.
The North West region has double the Ontario average of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations resulting in the need for integrated amputation prevention efforts.
